Minimally-invasive surgical procedures

New! da Vinci endometrial resection - minimally-invasive robotic surgery

Dr. Carnovale is the first physician in the state of Indiana to use the da Vinci surgical robot laser delivery system for the treatment of pelvic endometriosis. During endometrial resection, a minimally-invasive surgery, the da Vinci robot facilitates removal of multiple endometriomas through the articulation of a special laser fiber using a robotically-assisted arm. Removal of multiple endometriomas in one procedure is difficult to accomplish with laparoscopy (and could result in the need to perform a laparotomy). To inquire about this treatment, please contact us. Learn more about da Vinci Surgical System

Other procedures

  • Endometrial biopsy
As with any biopsy, a sample of tissue is obtained for analysis. Specifically, a small piece of the tissue lining the endometrial cavity is removed. In most cases, a thin flexible plastic catheter is utilized to perform the procedure.
  • Hysteroscopy
Mobile incubators are used to keep eggs and embryos under ideal conditions for survival.

A hysteroscopy is often recommended for patients who have difficulties with infertility, menstrual abnormalities, and/or recurrent pregnancy loss. It may assist in diagnosing and/or treating polyps, uterine fibroids, scarring, and uterine structural abnormalities. During this procedure a dilation and curettage may also be performed.
  • Laparoscopy
A laparoscopy is often recommended to patients who have pelvic pain with or without intercourse, history of abdominal surgery or pelvic infection, and/or menstrual abnormalities. It may assist in identifying and/or treating problems such as pelvic scarring (adhesions), endometriosis, uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, and ectopic pregnancies. Often, the physician may inject dye through the uterus during this procedure to see if the fallopian tubes are open.

Special freezers are used to store sperm, eggs and embryos. These freezers are padlocked and secured with alarms to prevent tampering and to ensure that the optimum storage environment is always maintained.

  • Hysterosalpingogram (HSG)
The HSG procedure is essentially an x-ray of the uterus at the same time that dye is being infused into the uterine cavity. The infusion of dye pushes the walls of the uterus apart and provides contrast to the uterus when the x-ray picture is taken.
  • Sonohysterogram / Saline infusion sonogram (SIS)
The saline sonogram procedure is essentially an ultrasound of the uterus at the same time that fluid is being infused into the uterine cavity. The infusion of sterile fluid pushes the walls of the uterus apart, improving the image obtained with the ultrasound.

Male partner evaluation

Evaluation of the male partner's sperm production is a critical part of every infertility evaluation. Sensitive to the need for both convenience and privacy, CRE offers a dedicated semen collection room, with connected bathroom, for the male partner of couples experiencing infertility. After semen is collected, it can be analyzed in our laboratory by our andrology specialists. Semen to be used for insemination is then prepared in the lab (under strict guidelines) using techniques that will optimize the quality of the sperm placed into the female partner's uterus.
